In 2023, we partnered with churches across Hobart, Australian House of Prayer, and Young Life to launch an annual outreach event called Light Up Hobart. The idea of Light Up Hobart is to spread the light of Christ in the midst of one of Hobart, Tasmania’s famous dark arts festivals, Dark Mofo. The Glow Fest outreach is not intended to compete with the Dark Mofo festival, but to simply use it as an opportunity to reach out to those participating in the festival. We believe that God’s heart for our city is to see both the land and its people transformed by the love of God. It is our hope that Hobart will be transformed from a city famous for it’s dark arts, into a city that is known for worshiping God with it’s creative talents. 

What is Dark mofo?

Dark Mofo is a dark arts and music festival held annually in Hobart, Tasmania during the winter solstice. The festival has a dark, Gothic theme which emphasizes pagan rituals and consists of spooky events held at nighttime. It is quite popular among Tasmanians, and many people even travel to Hobart from across Australia to experience the unique event.

With an inverted cross as it’s trademark, the Dark Mofo festival has been quite openly oppositional to Christianity. Many have experienced the spiritual heaviness that the festival brings over the city (and even over surrounding towns). We won’t go too much into detail about it here, but you can find out more by searching “Dark Mofo Hobart” on the web.

let’s be the light in the darkness

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it”. – John 1:5

Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:14 that “(we) are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden“. We are not meant to hide our light in the darkness, but to let it shine bright for all to see!

God’s heart is to bring light into our city in the midst of darkness. Our hope for this outreach is to reach those that are lost and searching for the truth and point them to the only Way, Truth and Life – Jesus! This involves an abundance of prayer, worship, spiritual warfare and, of course, evangelism.

  • Pray for the hearts of the people to be softened to receive God’s love.
  • Pray for the eyes of the people involved in Dark Mofo to be opened.
  • Pray for the salvation of our city.
  • Pray that the city of Hobart would not be know for dark arts, but that it would be known as a city that glorifies Jesus.
  • Pray for God to send more missionaries to Tasmania and Hobart.
  • Pray for unity within the body of Christ as we come together to Light up Hobart.
